Until Jan. 31, the Youth Singers of Calgary (YSC) are offering aspiring singers the chance to try out one of their rehearsals, for free, with the goal to get more Calgarians harmonized.
Megan Emmett, CEO of Youth Singers of Calgary, said that many people in the city like the idea of singing, but aren’t sure if choirs are for them.
“It’s a chance to come and see what we’re about and get to know us, and then they can decide if pursuing something in the performing arts is something they would enjoy in the future.”
She said that YSC also offers school-aged children something different than the might get from their local school.
“It’s a great option for people looking for something a little bit different for their kids, and it comes with a very supportive and inclusive community, an environment where kids can be themselves and thrive and express themselves, and really learn to shine through the performing arts,” Emmett said.
“We are relatively affordable compared to some other performing arts options, and we also have a full bursary and series of options available. So we really do work with every family who wants to be here. We’ll find a way for them to be here.”
The benefits for students wanting to be a part of the performing arts, she said, are vast.
“From a sense of confidence to a sense of ownership and a place in the world to finding their expressive voice, to unlocking a talent maybe they never knew they had, as well as connecting them with other communities here in Calgary or Canada or even through time,” Emmett said.
“Singing, dancing, it’s part of the human experience, and we’re so happy when we see new kids trying it out and finding it something that they enjoy.”
Specific dates and times for rehearsals for individual age groups can be found at www.youthsingers.org, and details on how to sign up for free.
