Seven candidates have submitted their nomination papers for the 2025 Calgary Catholic School District byelection after nominations closed Friday at noon.

The CCSD announced the byelection in October after former trustee Pamela Rath resigned in December and former trustee Cathie Williams died in July. Calgary residents can vote for two CCSD school trustees to represent Wards 4, 7, 11 and 12 on January 31.

In October, CCSD board of trustees chair Shannon Cook said the district must hold a byelection if there are two vacancies on the board, even though the next municipal election is scheduled for October 2025.

Candidates for Wards 4 and 7 are:

  • Joe Degagne
  • Dan Penna
  • Maria-Teresa Vecchio-Romano

Candidates for Wards 11 and 12 are:

  • Steve Chapman
  • Kimberly Chichon
  • Laura Dennison
  • Chantelle DUr

The City of Calgary said candidates have until noon on Monday, Jan. 6 to withdraw their candidacy. The official list will be posted by 2 p.m. that day.

In order to be eligible voters in the byelection, a person must be:

  • A resident of one of the wards (4, 7, 11 and 12)
  • A Canadian citizen aged 18 or older as of Jan. 31, 2025
  • Declare they share the same faith as the CCSD

Voters will be able to vote in advance on Jan. 24 and Jan. 25 from 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. at the following polling stations:

  • St. Margaret School located at 3320 Carol Drive Northwest
  • The Central Library located at 800 3rd Street Southeast
  • Monsignor J.S. Smith School at 2919 Douglasdale Boulevard Southeast

Voters who aren’t able to vote in advance are able to do so on Byelection Day, which is scheduled for Jan. 31 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. However, they must do so at designated voting stations.
