Former physician Dr. Phu Truong Vu has been charged by the Calgary Police Service with four counts of sexual assault, following an investigation that began in 2023.

Dr. Vu was alleged by CPS to have sexually assaulted four victims while working at the Brentwood Medical Clinic between 2016 and 2020.

“Each victim reported they were sexually assaulted in an examination room when the doctor performed non-consensual sexual acts during their medical examinations,” said CPS.

He is set to appear in court on Dec. 3.

The College of Physicans and Surgeons of Alberta said that they cancelled the practice permit of Dr. Vu in July of this year, following a suspension under the Health Professions Act in 2022.

“In 2022, Dr. Vu was found guilty of inappropriate and unsolicited behaviour during sensitive examinations of two patients. The second incident occurred after the 2019 implementation of An Act to Protect Patients, legislation which changed the definitions of sexual abuse and misconduct for regulated health professionals, and introduced mandatory sanctions,” said the CPSA.

“Dr. Vu’s actions were found to meet the definition of sexual abuse under the Health Professions Act (HPA). Dr. Vu’s practice permit was immediately suspended under the HPA as of Aug. 29, 2022, pending the Tribunal’s decision on sanction.”

The Calgary Police Service said that they encourage anyone who believes themselves to be the victim of sexual assault to report it to police, regardless of when that sexual assault may have occurred.

The service can be reached at 403-266-1234, or tips can be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers.
