Uncertainty over survival of Calgary’s The GRAND has come to an end, with a new agreement in principle in place between the theatre and landlord Allied REIT.
The agreement in principle was announced by The GRAND on Oct. 16, following over eight months of discussions about the theatre’s future in downtown Calgary.
Allied REIT purchased The Grand in 2021.
The theatre is set to announce formal details on the agreement in November, alongside a workshop for local arts organizations on Nov. 5 to explore new models for resident companies, create lasting partnerships, and re-establishing The GRAND as a home for the arts.
“While this significant milestone provides the foundation for western Canada’s oldest theatre to remain in the local performing arts community, additional funding and engagement from arts organizations are critical to ensuring we sustain this historic arts space,” said the organization.
The theatre also thanked its supporters and Allied for coming to an agreement after it was seemingly impossible earlier this year.
In February, The GRAND’s Executive Director Erynn Lyster outlined how their plan to dissolve the GRAND society and have Arts Commons take over as operator for the venue, was not accepted by Allied.
