The Calgary Public Library hopes to reopen all locations by Wednesday after a recent cybersecurity breach shut branches down across the city.

They said in an email to patrons on Tuesday, along with an update on their website, that locations would be opened for regular hours on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2024 with modified services.

“Patrons will have access to Library spaces and services that do not require technology,” read the email.

Available services at locations:

  • Collection browsing (limited access)
  • Limited materials check-out (10 items per card) and holds pick-up
  • Study areas and drop-in meeting room access (limited availability)
  • Programs and events that do not require technology, such as Family Storytime, Baby Rhyme Time, and Reading Buddies

The following services are not available at this time:

  • Book returns (due dates for all borrowed materials will be extended until further notice)
  • Technology and digital services, including printing, Chromebooks, computer access, internet, and Wi-Fi
  • Digital Library and eResources, with the exception of Libby and Kanopy
  • Programs and events that do require technology, including all virtual programming
  • Online room booking and program registration

They said they will restore the services as swiftly as possible, as soon as it’s safe to do so.

The CPL also encouraged people to change their password on any accounts that have the same or similar passwords as their library accounts.

At this time, however, library accounts are unavailable.
