The clickety-clack of pickleball will echo through the streets of northwest Calgary after a dozen new courts were added to the City of Calgary’s inventory.
Twelve brand-new dedicated pickleball courts have been added to Foothills Athletic Park, at the site of the old Volleydome, which was removed in 2023. When it was removed, the City of Calgary said that it revealed a “hidden gem” of non-functional tennis courts that could be repurposed.
“These new courts are a fantastic addition to Foothills Athletic Park, operated by our existing athletic park staff ensuring no additional operating costs,” the City of Calgary said in a prepared media release.
Construction on the $400,000 courts started in July and wrapped up last week, the City said. They said the courts are temporary until a new fieldhouse is built. Plans for up to 36 courts are included in early designs on that facility.
At this time, Calgarians can play at the courts on a first-come, first-served basis. Beginning in 2025, the pickleball courts will be moved into the City of Calgary’s Live and Play booking system.
Early next year, The City will present GamePLAN to City Council – the long-term vision for inclusive, accessible and sustainable recreation services,” the City of Calgary said. ‘
“This comprehensive plan will emphasize the urgent need for significant capital investment in the repair, modernization and replacement of our public recreation infrastructure.”
