Several local groups are coming together this summer to offer a variety of free programming at a popular southwest Calgary park.
The Quinterra Legacy Garden, located in South Glenmore Park, is the city’s first garden dedicated to music, and has lots of exciting programs featuring this summer.
Quinterra Legacy Garden was created to celebrate and honour the lives of five young Calgarians – Joshua Hunter, Kaitlan Perras, Jordan Segura, Lawrence Hong and Zackariah Rathwell – who were killed at a Brentwood house party in 2014. The park’s creation is thanks to the City of Calgary, Parks Foundation Calgary, and the five families affected.
“The families got together and wanted to do something to honour our kids and create something that would be lasting and have a positive impact and see the great things that they were up to,” said Barclay Hunter, co-founder of Quinterra Legacy Garden and Executive Director – The Prophets of Music Society.
One of Quinterra’s many purposes is to be a positive place for individuals to go and enjoy time with their families, said Hunter.
The garden will host numerous events this summer, including free yoga sessions by Yoga Santosha from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., every Thursday followed by various musical artists from 7 to 8 p.m., in partnership with Prophets of Music Society. Also offered this summer is Bloom Wellness Collective, which is a non-profit that provides opportunities for movement and expressive art for those with disabilities.
“We believe that the values of Bloom and goals of Quinterra Legacy Garden are perfectly aligned,” said Telisa Dubasov of Bloom.
“Our mission is to create a playful, non-judgemental and supportive community that enhances the quality of life for people with disabilities and we are grateful to the Quinterra Group for supporting us by sponsoring this program.”
This is Quinterra’s fourth year doing music-related programming, but there are plans to expand the programming into other avenues. They will include a drum circle each week, held every Saturday at 4 p.m. That’s led by Senegalese drummer Sylla.
“So, every Thursday night at 7, we do live music and then we’re starting to round out the programming with some other interesting things this year in particular,” said Hunter.
The availability and different events that are offered at Quinterra hope to provide moments where there is a community connection.
“It’s a way for people to come together. To us, the park is about wellness. It’s about people coming and everybody has things going on in their lives, and it’s a place to come and just be with other people,” said Hunter.
