Actor, stunt rider, and long-time member of the Stampede community Owen Crow Shoe is set to welcome more than 300,000 visitors to the 2024 Calgary Stampede Parade as parade marshal.
For more than 30 years—only missing one Stampede during that time—Crow Shoe has been attending the Stampede with his family at the Elbow River Camp, and performing in the Warrior Ride during the Stampede Rodeo Grand Entry.
He is a member of the Piikani Nation and Blood Tribe of the Blackfoot Confederacy.
Yet for international visitors, Crow Shoe will likely be best known for his work as a stunt rider in Oscar Award winning film The Revenant, and for his latest performance, acting in Horizon: An American Saga alongside Stampede 2022 Parade Marshal Kevin Costner.
“I grew up at the Calgary Stampede. I am proud to say my family has been part of this event since 1985 and I am honoured to continue that tradition leading the Parade and opening The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth,” said Crow Shoe, in a prepared media release.
“I’m fortunate to have made so many memories and life-long friendships at the Calgary Stampede and I look forward to making so many more along the Parade route this year.”
Crow Shoe was a nominee for the 2023 Next Generation Indie Film Awards for his work as part of the cast in the short Suzy Makes Cupcakes, which had it’s Canadian premiere at the Calgary International Film Festival.
He will also be serving as the 2024 Calgary Stampede Powwow Master of Ceremonies at the Saddledome, guiding audience members through the competition on July 7 and July 8.
“Owen Crow Shoe is an ambassador for Alberta, Canada and the Calgary Stampede,” said Will Osler, President and Chair of the Calgary Stampede Board of Directors.
“His commitment to celebrating and sharing his culture, both on and off the screen, is inspiring. He is a role model for many around the world and we couldn’t be more proud to have him lead the parade as marshal.”
The Calgary Stampede Parade starts at 9 a.m. on July 5, with prelude performances happening along the parade route starting at 7:30 a.m.
This year’s parade will include more than 100 entries, with more than 400 horses and 5,000 participants.
