Alisha Reynolds welcomed as new CEO of Tourism Calgary

A veteran of Calgary’s tourism industry will be taking the helm of Tourism Calgary.

After an extensive international search, the Tourism Calgary board of directors has chosen Calgarian Alisha Reynolds as the next CEO for the organization, following the announcement in 2023 that Cindy Ady would be retiring.

Reynolds comes to Tourism Calgary after serving as vice president of Development at the Northland Restaurant Group, which includes properties such as Moxies, Denny’s Canada, Shark Club, and Chop. Previously she was the vice president of the Sandman Hotel Group.

“We are thrilled to have one of the industry’s rising stars join Tourism Calgary as our new CEO,” said Mark Wilson, Chair of the Tourism Calgary Board of Directors.

“In addition to an impressive resume, Alisha brings with her an infectious spirit that won the unanimous support of the board. With a wealth of tourism business and leadership experience, an appetite for innovation, and a strong vision, Alisha is poised to lead us into a new era of growth and possibility.”

Tourism Calgary said that the search for a new CEO generated considerable interest, and it was Reynolds track record, talent, and in-line with the city’s new branding “blue-sky thinking,” that led to her appointment by the board.

Reynolds will be working with Ady during a transition period through June, after officially starting as CEO on June 3.

“I’m honoured and humbled by the opportunity to lead Calgary’s vibrant tourism industry during a monumental time of growth and opportunity,” said Reynolds.

“Calgary has limitless possibilities—our world-class events, venues, and attractions create unforgettable experiences for visitors. Tourism is not just an economic engine; it’s a lifeline for countless businesses and a source of pride for every Calgarian. I am eager to lend my vision and energy to this dynamic landscape.”

Taking charge in a time of big changes for tourism in Calgary

Tourism Calgary is planning on unveiling a 10-year tourism strategy, to support a province-wide goal of $25 billion in visitor expenditures by 2035.

The organization unveiled a strategic three-year plan in 2023, that would help grow the visitor economy to $2.7 billion in Calgary by 2027.

Renyolds said that that she didn’t have any plans to change that strategic direction for Tourism Calgary.

“I want to get in and listen and learn. I am a sponge, and taking on this new role I have a lot to learn. So I want to get in and and learn from this incredibly smart, bright team to understand what work has been conducted to date and how I can help support that going forward.”

Among the projects that will be coming to completion under Reynolds’s tenure include the BMO Centre expansion, set to open in June, along with further development of the Culture and Entertainment district including the Calgary Event Centre, the redevelopment of Arts Commons and Olympic Plaza, and the completion of the redevelopment of the Glenbow Museum.

Reynolds’ will be attending the opening of the new BMO Centre just two days after her start as CEO.

“I love that we have two convention centres. Now of course, [Calgary Telus Convention Centre] is celebrating its 50th birthday and still looking good as new. I think there’s a role to play for both convention facilities within the city,” she said.

“I stand under that BMO space and just think this is a world class piece of architecture that is an indication of Calgary leaning in investing in the community, and believing in the potential of the visitor economy. I think we have an amazing story to tell, and I think this is a great moment for Calgary.”
