Calgary police said that late Thursday afternoon, a situation involving a man on Reconciliation Bridge had been resolved.
The situation went on for more than 20 hours, police said, and was successfully resolved through negotiation. They credited help from the Calgary Fire Department for their partnership in the resolution.
Police were initially called to Reconciliation Bridge at 11:20 p.m. Wednesday for a man experiencing a mental health situation.
To create space for emergency personnel to work, the Calgary police had closed access to the downtown core in the early morning hours.
The closures impacted both directions of the Reconciliation Bridge, the 4th Avenue Flyover and the 5th Avenue flyover, police said. Later in the day, the latter was reopened.
They had asked that the public avoid the area and plan alternate routes on their morning commutes.
“We recognize that this incident significantly impacted access for many Calgarians commuting into the downtown area for work, accessing their homes and local businesses, while also causing several delays in the surrounding areas,” Calgary police said in a news release.
“We appreciate the public’s patience as emergency crews worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of all involved.”
