Calgary Fire Department firefighters found the body of a man in the basement of a home in Evanston after a house fire on Jan. 25.

Firefighters responded to 911 calls that a fire had broken out in the northwest Calgary community at approximately 9:30 p.m, and found that smoke and flames were coming from basement windows.

CFD said they were quickly able to bring the fire under control and were able to enter the home to search for occupants after reports that a resident of the home may have been in the basement.

“The firefighters searching immediately found one male occupant in the basement and determined that unfortunately the occupant was deceased.  No other occupants were in the home at the time of the fire,” said CFD.

“The Calgary Fire Department would like to remind all citizens of the importance of working smoke alarms and ensuring that all occupants have an escape plan in the event of a fire or emergency.”

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Calgary Fire Department and the Calgary Police Service.
