Netflix stars walk red carpet for series filmed in Calgary

All of the stars aligned for a Hollywood entrance on Wednesday evening, as the glitz and glamour the red carpet debuted Netflix’s new television show, My Life With the Walter Boys, at Eau Claire Cinemas.

The series was based on Ali Novak’s debut novel of the same name, which tells the story of 15-year-old New York socialite Jackie Howard adjusting to life in rural Colorado after the death of her parents.

My Life With the Walter Boys stars Nikki Rodriguez (On My Block), Ashby Gentry (Are You Afraid of the Dark), and Noah LaLonde (Criminal Minds), alongside veteran television actors Marc Blucas (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Sarah Rafferty (Suits), was filmed in-and-around Calgary in 2022.

“I know we all love the book, I read it like three times,” said Rodriguez.

“I’m very protective over Jackie and I hope, I think we did it justice. I think we did a really good job and we’re really proud.”

LaLonde, while walking the red carpet, spoke highly of how filming locations like Calgary and Kananaskis played a huge part in bringing the show to life.

“A lot of my friends have been remarking when they see the show, they’re like, ‘man, that shot is crazy.’ And the three words that I type repeatedly are no green screen. There’s one moment of green screen in the entire show, and the rest of it is all just the beautiful Calgarian terrain,” he said.

“The thing about that is that the show doesn’t even do it justice, and the show is beautiful. When you’re there, when you’re there looking at these places, you can’t believe that a place like this could actually exist.”

That sentiment was shared by Blucas, who said that it’s well known that Hollywood chases tax credits, sometimes to the point where actors don’t know what they’re going to get when they are on set, but that it was a pleasure to work on somewhere that’s postcard-perfect without the photoshop.

“Calgary is just amazing. The crews here are so talented, so creative, so kind. It’s just such a pleasure to come back,” Blucas said.

“The location was amazing, and it doesn’t all line up like that a lot of times. So I’m really hoping that people tune in, and a lot of people tell all their friends and they watch it, and then they and they give us a chance to do it again.”

As for Gentry, he said that he hoped audiences would have a chance to do some bingeing and take in an escape this weekend.

“It’s a really lovely world to escape into, and I think if you look at what’s going on in the world right now there’s a lot that people want to and need to escape from. I just encourage audiences to escape responsibly and to use that time spent in Silver Falls [Colorado], to bring back a better version of themselves into the real world,” Gentry said.

The series was produced by iGeneration Studios (The Kissingbooth films), and Sony Pictures Television.

My Life With the Walter Boys is available now on Netflix.
