Calgary Surge stay undefeated after 85-82 win over Niagara

The Calgary Surge extended their inaugural season run to three games after another comeback victory on Tuesday night.

The Surge, behind by three going into target score time, secured the 85-82 win over the Niagara River Lions at the WinSport Event Centre on Tuesday evening in Calgary. The win comes on the heels of a record-setting 16-point comeback in target score time in the second half of a home-and-home series against the Edmonton Stingers to open the CEBL season.

At one point the Surge were up by 19, powered by forwards Simi Shittu and Trevon Scott, along with guard Sean Miller-Moore. The River Lions clawed back to take the lead going into target time, with the Surge finally pulling out ahead.

After going the first two games with only 16 total bench points, the Surge bench capitalized on opportunities, scoring 22 against the River Lions. Mason Bourcier led the way with seven points in a season-high 23 minutes, including two three-pointers. Justin Jackson and Elijah Lufilé each chipped in with six points.

“The team finds a way to win,” said Surge head coach Nelson Terroba.

One point away from victory, Simi Shittu was at the free throw line in target score time to close out the game. After missing both free throws, Scott, who finished the game with 14 rebounds, corralled another offensive rebound and laid it in to close out Niagara.

“When Simi got on the free throw line, I thought the game was over,” Scott said.

“But me being the person I am, and being confident in myself, if that ball comes off the rim, I was gonna go get it. I’m going to finish this game for us, and that’s exactly what happened.”
