Calgary police have a man and woman in custody in connection with the 2021 death of a toddler.

In October 2021, Calgary police were called to a residence in the 2800 block of 14 Avenue SE after reports of an 18-month-old boy in medical distress. At the scene, the child was unresponsive.

First responder efforts were unsuccessful, and the child died at the scene. The medical examiner identified the child as 18-month-old Gabriel Sinclair-Pasqua.

The Calgary police said detectives conducted a lengthy and complex investigation. They interviewed witnesses, reviewed the evidence and autopsy results, and put together events leading to the death.

The death has since been declared a homicide, police said.

A man and woman were taken into custody on Feb. 16 and charges are pending, police said.

“Investigating the death of a child is incredibly difficult on all first responders and police officers,” said Staff Sergeant Martin Schiavetta of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit.

“For the past 16 months, we have worked tirelessly to ensure that those responsible for Gabriel’s death were held accountable. Our deepest condolences go out to those who continue to grieve Gabriel’s loss.”
