The new CEBL entry will open its inaugural season against its provincial rival the Edmonton Stingers.

The schedule is set for the inaugural Calgary Surge basketball season, and they’ll open at home against a provincial rival.

The Canadian Elite Basketball League released the 2023 schedule Tuesday, with an east-west conference model for the league’s 10 teams. The Calgary Surge will play in a conference with the Edmonton Stingers, the Saskatchewan Rattlers, the Vancouver Bandits and the Winnipeg Sea Bears.

Just over half the team’s games (13 out of 20) will be played against conference teams, the CEBL said. The remaining seven games will be a crossover against some of their Eastern Conference foes.

The Calgary Surge will open at home on May 27 against the Edmonton Stingers at 4 p.m.

Late last year, the Calgary Surge went on a Home Team Tour to showcase the team to a variety of groups across Calgary.

“The tour confirmed that Calgarians want a team that’s welcoming, inspiring, and committed to winning for everyone,” read a news release.

Every fan who enters WinSport Event Centre can expect to feel at home and experience a

sports and entertainment event like no other.”

The team was announced in October 2022, as the Guelph Nighthawks relocated to the city for the 2023 season.
