A man shot by police after a confrontation in northwest Calgary was taken to hospital late Wednesday.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is now investigating the incident.

According to police, they were dispatched to a call in the 0-100 block of Varsity Estates Circle NW for reports of a man with a weapon.

When officers arrived, they found a man in a parkade. They attempted to de-escalate the situation over an extended period of time, police said. According to police, the man did not comply with officers’ direction.

The situation escalated and an officer fired their weapon. The man was given medical care at the scene by officers and EMS and taken to hospital in serious but stable condition, police said.

One officer suffered minor injuries and was treated on scene.

There is no further information available during the ASIRT investigation, police said.
