The suspect later took his own life on a pathway nearby, police said.

A Calgary police officer was shot and wounded early Friday after looking into reports of a suspicious vehicle.

According to Calgary police, at around 2:45 a.m., officers were called to the 500 block of Canyon Meadows Drive SW after there were reports of a suspicious vehicle.

Callers said it was sitting in a residential parking lot with an occupant inside with loud music and erratic behaviour. When officers arrived, a man fired at the officer, hitting him in the leg, police said.

The officer returned fire as the suspect fled on foot toward a nearby park. The man continued down a nearby path where he died by suicide.

EMS attended the officer suffering from the leg wound and he was taken to hospital in stable condition. He has since been released.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has taken over the investigation.
