Calgary police are investigating after a man died from injuries sustained during an assault in the East Village area.

Officers were called to the 400 block of 6 Avenue SE around 1:20 a.m. Tuesday for reports of a man in medical distress on the sidewalk.

According to police, lifesaving efforts were made by witnesses and first responders. The victim was transported to hospital where he later died.

An autopsy is scheduled for later this week, police said. Initial evidence suggested the man died after a physical altercation, they said.

Officers were on scene Tuesday morning talking with witnesses and collecting CCTV footage from the surrounding area. They’re hoping to piece together the circumstances surrounding the man’s death, along with his identity.

If it’s determined to be a homicide, it would be Calgary’s 23rd in 2022. It would also be the second in three days after a man died in Rundle early Sunday.

Anyone with information on this incident, or the man’s identity can call the Calgary police non-emergency line at 403-266-1234.
