The Calgary Flames pulled off a third-period victory over the Dallas Stars on Wednesday, clinching a vital 3-2 lead in their first-round NHL playoff series.

The Flames, buoyed after trailing 1-0 after the second period, managed to score a trio of crowd-pleasing goals in the third. Flames centre Mikael Backlund, winger Andrew Mangiapane, and centre Trevor Lewis had markers in the period.

Head coach Darryl Sutter praised the Stars post-game, calling them a tough opponent.

“Dallas really tightened their game up, and we had some guys who weren’t quite ready for that,” he said.

On the turn-around in the third period, he said the teams were close in the way they play.

“They don’t give up much, we don’t give up much, so it comes down to maybe extra effort somewhere.”

Nearly 5,000 Calgarians watched the fame from the Flames’ Red Lot outside of the Saddledome. Spirits ran high, despite a long line to enter the free-for-fans venue.

The Flames will take on the Dallas Stars again this Friday in Texas. Puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
