The Calgary Stampede released its 2021 poster, capturing resiliency and optimism, they said.

The 2020 edition of the Calgary Stampede was cancelled earlier this year, but plans are underway to host the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth next summer.

This year’s poster was created by 22-year-old Calgarian, Lexi Hilderman. She won the Calgary Stampede Youth Poster Competition.

The piece shows a young Fancy Dancer with rainbow ribbons. It’s artwork inspired by an image of Katari Righthand from the Siksika Nation.

“I was drawn to her story and it became important for me to learn about her culture and to understand how she feels when she’s dancing,” said Hilderman, in a prepared release.

Hilderman had spent time with Righthand’s family. There she learned that she was given the name Nààpiwa otó piim Akikowan, which means Rainbow Girl. The name was bestowed upon Righthand following the 2013 southern Alberta floods.

“I wanted to show her standing strong, looking forward with determination,” said Hilderman.

Sharing the poster is the first step

Calgary Stampede officials said they don’t have all the details of what the 2021 show will look like.

“What we can tell you is that we are here for our community when they are ready to ride again,” said Steve McDonough, first vice—chairman of the Calgary Stampede.

“And when we can once again gather together to celebrate, it will be that much more meaningful.”

Tickets are being sold now for the 2021 Calgary Stampede, but they have flexible and fully-refundable options.

Calgary Stampede 2021 plans will be done with all public health orders in mind, they said.

Hilderman received a $10,000 scholarship as the winner and the artwork will be a part of Calgary Stampede history.

The Calgary Stampede is being planned for July 9 to 18, 2021.
