Calgary Remembrance Day: Where to watch an online ceremony

This year, the Royal Canadian Legion is asking people not to attend Remembrance Day ceremonies in person.

This year’s Remembrance Day ceremonies will look different than they have before. Due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, ceremonies will be significantly smaller or, in some cases, not open to the public. Many, however, are available to the public via livestream.

Flags at all Government of Canada, Government of Alberta and City of Calgary facilities will be lowered to half-mast from sunrise to sundown on Remembrance Day.

There are fewer Poppy Fund donation boxes around the city this year, but people still have the online option to make a small donation to help Calgary’s veterans.

Here are a few of the ways Calgarians can safely pay their respects:

The Military Museums: The Remembrance Day service this year will be closed to the public. But the museums will be hosting a virtual event which will be live-streamed on their Facebook page beginning at 10:20 a.m.

The Hangar Flight Museum: CTV Calgary will have live coverage of their Remembrance Day service from 10:57am to 11:30am on Nov. 11

Field of Crosses (Memorial Drive): There will be no sunrise or sunset ceremonies on Remembrance Day and the park will be closed to the public between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Remembrance Day Ceremony will be broadcast live on Global Calgary from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. and streamed online.

Canadian Pacific (CP) Remembrance Day ceremony: This year, CP will live stream a private ceremony in place of a public gathering. CP invites viewers to watch the ceremony virtually starting at 10:45 a.m. Even though the ceremony is going to be online, CP said many important elements will still be incorporated.

Central Memorial Park: There are no official ceremonies this year. Those visiting the Cenotaph are reminded to maintain a safe distance from others and wear a face covering.

Battalion Park: In conjunction with the Ward 6 office, there will be a live streamed Remembrance Day ceremony at Battalion Park in Signal Hill SW.
