The Calgary Humane Society (CHS) is hoping for the public’s help to find the owner of an abandoned dog tied to a bench outside their location.

According to the CHS, a young male German Shepherd was left early Friday morning around 4:30 a.m.  CCTV footage shows a newer-model black truck leaving the area shortly after.

They’re hoping people may recognize either the dog or the truck so they can reach the owner.

“There is never an excuse to abandon an animal,” said Brad Nichols, senior manager, animal cruelty investigations, with the CHS.

“The temperature during this poor dog’s tethering was subzero and there was no shelter to be sought.”

Nichols said the dog could have been surrendered to a 24-hour veterinary clinic where it would have had immediate care.

The CHS said they are still operational and available to provide animal welfare services.

“While we understand these are unprecedented times with the COVID-19 pandemic, Calgary Humane Society remains available for emergency situations,” said Nichols.

A news release from the Calgary Humane Society said to contact them “If you are unable to provide this care and criminal actions are being contemplated, as in this case.”
