Days after making the public announcement of its arrival, the Calgary Zoo shared unfortunate news with members Saturday.

Their new male baby giraffe, born to mom Emara Sept. 29, has died.

“We knew when he was born so tiny that it would be an uphill battle, but had high hopes that the love of his Mama and dedicated round the clock care from our team would be enough to help him begin to thrive,” read a message to Calgary Zoo volunteers.

The giraffe had arrived early, but zoo officials said it was near the end of the gestation period.

Emara has had two previous miscarriages and she had a calf that died with 48 hours of birth.

“We are supporting Emara and our teams through this sad outcome and welcome everyone to join us in remembering our littlest tower,” read the Calgary Zoo’s Facebook page.
