One man was taken into custody after a Calgary Police Service vehicle was stolen Monday.

Just before 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 21, a marked police vehicle was stolen near 28 Avenue and 14 Street SW while it was responding to reports of a suspicious person in the area.

According to police, the office had stopped his vehicle on the side of the road near a group of people and got out to talk with them. That’s when the suspect is alleged to have made off with the car.

HAWCS, along with “covert resources” were used to track the stolen vehicle down as it drove across the city. Thirty minutes later the vehicle was safely contained in a parkade located on Dr. Carpenter Circle NW. One person was taken into custody.

Officers confirmed that no firearms were left inside the vehicle when it was taken.

CPS Traffic Section is investigating the theft. The CPS is also reviewing the circumstances around the theft in order to prevent similar incidents in the future.
