CALGARY, ALTA., (Nov. 2, 2018) — It doesn’t get much quieter than the SAIT Trojans men’s hockey locker room on Friday night.
The Trojans were shocked in their own building, losing 3-1 to the Briercrest College Clippers in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played at SAIT Arena.
“A few bad penalties early in the game gave them momentum, and they just flat-out out worked us in the first 10 minutes,” said Trojans captain, Dean Allison (4th year, Surrey, BC, Bachelor of Business Administration). “Give full credit to that team. Us, we just have to be better.”
The Trojans, who had been unbeaten in five straight games to start the season, have now lost two in a row and sit at 5-2. The Clippers move to 2-5 with the victory.
“It’s pretty frustrating,” Allison continued. “We’re disappointed in ourselves. We got out played in our own building and there is no excuse for that.”
Four minutes into the game, Briercrest’s Ryley Cribbin gave the visitors the lead by beating Trojans goalie Payton Lee (2nd year, Cranbrook, BC, Power and Process Operations).
Thirteen minutes later, the Clippers went up 2-0 when Josiah Friesen found the back of the net.
SAIT was able to cut the lead to 2-1 in the second frame when Parker Evans-Campbell (3rd year, High River, Alta., Bachelor of Business Administration) scored on Clippers netminder Dan Dekoning.
That would be all Dekoning would allow, as he turned aside 46 other Trojans shots to earn the win.
Pressing late with their net empty and the power play advantage, the Trojans allowed Joshua Mitton to score short-handed to ice the win for the Clippers.
The teams will finish off their weekend set tomorrow afternoon at 2pm at SAIT.
“The guys have now to figure out what went wrong, and as soon as midnight hits, our focus will be on tomorrow’s game and what we need to do to win it,” Allison finished.
