It would be great if the data we pooled together could answer basic questions – in a conversational way.

One Calgary artificial intelligence company is making that a reality for businesses – and now they’re vying for $100,000 in a Silicon Valley app showdown.

chata.ai is one of 10 finalists for the Intuit $100K Small Business App Showdown at Intuit’s Quickbooks Connect conference in San Jose, California.

Chata.ai operates with a proprietary Natural Language Understanding (NLU) engine, with a conversational reporting and analytics tool that analyzes data and provides information that would otherwise done with complex calculations, exporting to spreadsheets or learning numerous software programs.

“We are changing the way businesses interact with their data. Being selected for this competition is endorsement that chata.ai is having an impact,” said Kelly Cherniwchan, chata.ai’s Founder and CEO.

The company secured $2.5 million in seed funding from Calgary investors back in November 2017 and four months later they landed their first integration with the Quickbooks accounting software, which has nearly 3.5 million users.

“We are thrilled to have chata.ai as a Top 10 finalist in our Small Business App Showdown,” said Alex Barnett, Director of the Intuit Developer Group, in a prepared statement via email.

“Intuit’s platform gives our accountant and small business customers the accessibility to solutions that are specific to solving their needs, like chata.ai, all the while helping them become trusted advisors and savvy, growth-focused business owners.

Competing apps are rated on a series of criteria including business potential, innovation, software subscriptions, public appeal and impact. The event is scheduled for Nov. 7.

Other Canadian companies that have been finalists in previous years include dryrun (2017), Clio (2017), and Beanworks (2016).
