One man has died after a fire in a southwest Calgary townhouse, fire officials said Tuesday evening.
Firefighters responded to a townhouse fire on Richardson Way SW around 4:15 p.m. on Oct. 31. Callers reported seeing dark smoke and fire visible from the outside, according to the Calgary Fire Department.
When firefighters arrived, the fire was fully involved on the main floor and fire was coming out of the front door. They entered the house with a hose line and at that time they found a man inside on the floor.
The man was taken from the home and turned over to a waiting EMS crew. Lifesaving efforts began and he was transported to the hospital where he later died, fire officials said.
Fire crews completed extinguishing the fire and tended to hotspots. Nearby residents were also evacuated as a precaution.
Damage to the home was significant, Calgary fire officials said, though they were able to prevent the spread to other townhome units in the building.
Fire investigators are on the scene, as are Calgary police arson detectives are also working on the case as there was a fatality.
