Charges laid against family member in St. Andrews Heights homicide

The Calgary Police Service laid charges for second degree murder against Alex Xu, 20, following an investigation into a suspicious death that occurred on June 30.

Police were called to the 1400 block of 29 Street NW on Friday, following reports of a deceased woman at that residence. Officers took one man into custody at the scene.

Alice Ai, 56, was identified by CPS as the victim of a homicide, following an investigation by the CPS Homicide Unit.

“This was an incredibly tragic incident for this family and a difficult case for all first responders involved,” said Acting Staff Sergeant Lee Treit with the CPS Homicide Unit.

“As police officers, our job often brings us into someone’s most difficult moments. In these instances, we lean on each other to provide support to a victim’s family and see these investigations through the court process.”

CPS has not revealed any additional circumstances or details of the homicide.

Xu is expected to appear in court on July 3, 2023.

The homicide was the city’s 10th for 2023, and the second homicide that was domestic-related.
