Calgarian facing four terrorism charges

A 20-year-old Calgary man is facing terrorism charges, after being arrested on June 15 by the RCMP Federal Policing Integrated National Security Enforcement Team and the Calgary Police Service.

Zakarya Rida Hussein was charged with two counts of facilitating a terrorist activity contrary to section 83.19 of the Criminal Code, and two counts of participating in or contributing to, directly or indirectly, an activity of a terrorist group contrary to section 83.18(1) of the Criminal Code.

The RCMP said in a media release sent Friday that because the investigation into Hussein is ongoing, they would not be making further comments.

Hussein appeared before the courts on June 16, and has been remanded to custody pending future court appearances.

Charges for facilitating terrorist activity and participating in terrorist activity within Canada are rare. According to Statistics Canada, only 12 charges for participation were laid in 2021, and one for the facilitation of terrorist activity across the nation.

Since 2004, in Calgary, 20 charges have been laid for the participation in terrorist activity, and nine charges have been laid for the facilitation of terrorist activities.
