Teen girl shot and killed in Martindale

Calgary police are investigating after a fatal shooting the city’s northeast.

Officers were called to the 200 block of Martin Crossing Crescent NE in the northeast community of Martindale around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

They were responding to reports of a shooting in an alley, that occurred in the 300 block of Martindale Drive NE.

Police said the victim, a 15-year-old girl, was in the passenger seat of a vehicle when she was shot.

“We are still in the early stages of this investigation, and we have a lot of unanswered questions that we are working through,” said Staff Sergeant Martin Schiavetta with the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit.

“At this point, we are unable to confirm if this shooting was targeted, and we have dedicated a significant amount of resources to identify any persons involved.”

Police don’t yet have a description of the suspect. The service said that the suspect fled in an unknown direction after the shooting.

More details about the victim will be released once an autopsy is complete and next of kin are notified.

This is Calgary’s third homicide of 2023.
