Six youths charged in November 2022 Calgary swarming attack

Police are still looking for two of the youth, one is as yet unidentified, CPS said.

Six Calgary youth have been charged, two are still wanted after an alleged November swarming attack on Shoppers Drug Mart employees in November 2022.

Two employees were significantly injured in the Nov. 1, 2022 attack, police said.

Around 4 p.m. that day, a group of male youths had been asked to leave the Shoppers Drug Mart in the 800 block of 17 Avenue SW after allegedly causing a disturbance.

According to police, the group left the store but were still outside the entrance. One employee left the location and was engaged in a verbal altercation with the group. The fight escalated and the employee was repeatedly physically assaulted, according to police. 

Another employee that tried to intervene was also allegedly assaulted, police said.

The investigation led to seven of eight youth suspects being identified. On Jan 2, six of the youth were arrested and each charged with one count of aggravated assault and one count of assault. The youth were between 15 and 17 and cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, police said.

The seventh suspect was identified and is believed to be 18 years old. Police said he will be named once charges are leading. They are trying to locate him.

The eighth person involved remains unknown to Calgary police. Police believe the seventh suspect knows the eighth. He’s described as average height for a 16-to-18-year-old male, slim build, medium-dark skin tone, wearing a dark winter jacked, black sweatpants and white running shoes.

Police cannot provide CCTV footage of the suspect because they aren’t certain if he’s a minor.
