Photos: Long weekend of well attended community sporting events in Calgary

Cycling, soccer, and hockey took over city streets and fields over the Heritage Day long weekend in Calgary.

Drawing athletes from across the nation were the Tour de Bowness, Play On, and the Calgary Minor Soccer Assocation Calgary Cup.

And although the weekend began with concerns from residents over parking for the Play On event, thousands of Calgarians visited Marda Loop, Bowness, and surrounding communities to take in the sporting events.

Kim Kerr, competition event organizer for the CMSA Calgary Cup, called their weekend of soccer a great weekend of team building and friendship making.

“We have a team here from that flew from Montreal—they were making friends, and they even had a family from the other team they were playing bring them homemade cookies,” she said.

“We’re seeing that across the board teams with cheering on each other teams, and medal presentations, teams congratulating the other teams that won gold, silver, bronze.”

Kerr said that she hoped the the positive experience of competing in Calgary would translate to future interest for next year.

“I hope the Montreal teams and the Winnipeg teams all want to come back and bring more teams out here,” she said.
