More charges expected after Forest Lawn shooting victim dies in hospital

More charges are expected against a man after a victim died in hospital after being shot in Calgary’s southeast Tuesday morning.

Calgary police were called around 8:10 a.m. Tuesday, June 14, to the 2200 block of 45 Street SE after reports of a shooting. When they arrived, an injured man was located and taken to hospital, police said.

The victim later died in hospital, according to police. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.

Officers located a suspect in nearby Erinwoods and that person was taken into custody.

Sam Frank Barbera, 35, faced several charges in connection with the initial shooting, including aggravated assault and charges relating to possession of a firearm. Police said it was the city’s 66th shooting this year. The death was Calgary’s 14th homicide.

““We believe this was a targeted attack and a senseless act that has cost someone their life,” said Martin Schiavetta of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit.

“Thankfully, we were able to locate, arrest and charge the person believed to be responsible in less than 48 hours. While a significant portion of shootings are targeted in our city, gun violence doesn’t just impact those involved in crime. It puts our entire community at risk. “

Police said Barbera will be facing additional charges related to the death.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234.
