Photos: Fires destroy homes in Evanston, school evacuated

The Calgary Fire Department battled a pair of duplex fires in the community of Evanston on Friday.

The homes, located along Evanston Close NW, adjacent to St. Josephine Bakhita School, were heavily damaged by the fires.

Calgary Police confirmed via social media that the school was evacuated in the afternoon. Police also closed off roads leading into the community as firefighters battled the blazes.

The Calgary Fire Department said in a statement that they responded shortly after 2:30 pm after receiving several reports of smoke and fire.

“Due to the large volume of smoke, responding crews called a working fire and a second alarm while enroute to ensure adequate resources were on scene. On arrival 2 duplex structures were fully involved in smoke and fire, crews quickly focused on extinguishment of the source homes and searches of the structures,” said the CFD.

A total of four homes were destroyed by the fires, and a further three had damage due to heat. The school, which was adjacent to the fires, was not damaged.

No injuries were reported by the fire department, although eight residents of the homes were displaced due to the fires.
