Man found dead in southeast Calgary house fire

One man was found dead in a southeast Calgary fire Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called to a home in the 100 block of Deerview Way SE in the community of Deer Ridge Tuesday evening around 10:50 p.m.

When fire crews arrived, a multi-unit residential home was showing signs of smoke. Firefighters called in a second alarm to ensure adequate resources were on scene, fire officials said.

With the amount of flames coming from the basement area, firefighters first initiated a defensive attack of the fire, they said. It was then quickly brought under control with the use of the aerial ladder and exterior hose.

When firefighters search the inside of the home, they found a male resident that had died. The official cause of death will be determined by the Office of the Medical Examiner.

No other residents were found in the home.

Officials said the fire was contained to the originating unit. There was heavy heat and smoke damage to the unit. Damage to other units was minimal, they said.

Fire investigators, the Calgary Police Service and the medical examiner were on scene for the investigation.
