Calgary Police say that a silver mini-van, driven by an alleged impaired driver, hit the combined entrances to the townhouses on 128 Avenue NE at 11:15 p.m. Monday. They said that investigators discovered that the van had been stolen from a Falconridge mall approximately an hour prior.

The driver was believed to be speeding, before hitting the curb of a roundabout in front of the townhouse complex, and then crashing into the homes.

“Thankfully no residents were physically injured during the crash,” said police.

The driver exited the van inside of one of the two residences, before breaking an additional window within that home to climb outside. The driver was treated on scene by EMS, before being arrested for impaired driving. Charges have not yet been laid.

The Calgary Fire Department rescued the residents of one of the townhouses after the van destroyed the stairs in their home. The department was also able to stabilize the townhouse structure and remove the van from inside the homes.
