Man dies after police shooting, CPS dog wounded in southeast Calgary incident

A man is dead after being shot by Calgary police during an altercation in southeast Calgary Saturday.

Calgary police said officers responded around 3:40 p.m. Saturday to the area of 45 Street and 17 Avenue SE for reports of a man believed to be in possession of weapons.

Witnesses at the scene told police the man had assaulted a bystander and was threatening others.  Once police arrived, they located the man, who still had the weapons.

According to police, they tried to negotiate a peaceful solution. Despite this effort, police said the man’s actions led to officers firing at the man.

Police said life-saving efforts were made, but the man died at the scene.

A Calgary police service dog was also injured by the suspect. He was taken to an animal hospital in life-threatening condition. The dog is stable and receiving care.

The officers weren’t injured. Roads in the area were closed for the investigation.
