A 46-year-old Calgary cyclist suffered serious, life-threatening injuries after being hit by a person driving a van just after midnight Saturday.
Calgary police were called to Memorial Drive eastbound around 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning, after reports of a cyclist being hit.
According to police, the 46-year-old male cyclist was hit by the driver of an eastbound Dodge Caravan in the right-hand lane just before Deerfoot Trail. Police said the cyclist was riding along the edge of the road and when struck was projected nearly 20 metres onto a grassy median.
After hitting the cyclist, the van veered left across all three lanes of Memorial Drive and hit the LRT barricade. It rolled and came to rest nearby.
The driver of the van suffered serious injuries.
According to police, both drivers were believed to be impaired by alcohol, and the cyclist was also believed to be impaired by drugs. Excessive speed isn’t considered a factor, police said.
