Macleod Trail crash kills father, daughter, with second daughter in hospital

A father and his seven-year-old daughter died after a collision in Calgary’s south on Wednesday afternoon.

Calgary police said an 11-year-old girl, daughter and sister of the victims, was taken to hospital police said.

The crash happened at Macleod Trail near Lake Fraser Gate around 5:20 p.m., according to EMS.

According to police, a three-quarter-ton pickup driven by a man in his 50s, was travelling northbound on Macleod Trail when it rear ended the family’s vehicle. The force pushed the vehicle into the centre median of the southbound lanes where it was hit again by another pick up.

The driver of the 3/4-ton truck, who received no injuries as a result of the collision, fled the scene on foot and was apprehended a short distance away. There is no evidence of alcohol impairment at this time, police said, but excessive speed is considered a factor. He was taken into custody and and multiple charges are pending, police said.

Charges laid against driver

Following an investigation into the double fatality hit-and-run collision on Macleod Trail SE, Calgary police have charged Yannick Joseph Bouchard, 51, of Calgary, with:

  • Fail/refuse to comply with demand after an accident resulting in death
  • Two counts of dangerous operation causing death
  • One count of dangerous operation causing bodily harm
  • Two counts of hit and run causing death
  • One count of hit and run causing bodily harm

Additional charges are pending and the investigation into the circumstances of the collision are ongoing. Bouchard remains in custody at this time pending his next court appearance.

Police are hoping Calgarians in the area have dashcam footage of the incident to help aid the investigation.

“To the family and friends of the victims, our thoughts are with you during this difficult time. This is a season in which we should be celebrating with our loved ones, not mourning their loss,” said Traffic Section Sgt. Colin Foster.

“Help is available to anyone who may have witnessed or who was affected by this horrific and tragic incident by either contacting 2-1-1, or the Calgary Police Service Victims Assistance Support Team at 403-428-8398.”

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call Calgary police at 403-266-1234.
