Random downtown Calgary attacks halt CTrain in the core

UPDATE: Calgary police have one person in custody in relation to these attacks. They also found a fourth victim with a hand injury. That victim was taken to hospital, treated and released.

Calgary police are investigating after a series of random downtown machete attacks led to the shutdown of the CTrain.

Calgary police were initially called around 3:15 a.m. Friday after a man called for help from the 4 Street SW CTrain station. He said that he’d been slashed by a machete, police said. Thirty minutes later, another male victim was found unconscious in a bus shelter on 6 Avenue and 1 Street SW.

Both victims were taken to hospital, police said. The first victim was in serious condition, the second in life-threatening condition.

Around 4 a.m., Calgary police found another victim in the 1000 block of 6 Avenue SW. He said he was knocked unconscious and woke up a short time later. That victim had minor injuries and wasn’t taken to hospital, police said.

Transit closures are in effect. Roads are also closed in the area. A five block radius at 4 Street SW to east of 1 Street SW remains an active police scene.

“We are extremely concerned and have officers from across the city working to locate the suspect and collect valuable evidence,” said District 1 Staff Sergeant, Kurt Jacobs.

“At this time, we are determining whether there are any other victims. We ask for cooperation from the public in the downtown core as we deal with a large police scene.”

There haven’t been reports of additional attacks at this time, police said.

Anyone with information on the attacks can call Calgary police at 403-266-1234.
