Calgary youth looking to sharpen their coding skills have the chance to participate in round two of a national coding competition.
Crack the Code Challenge first launched Jan. 15, but the second round begins Feb. 8 and runs until March 1. It’s operated by MindFuel, a non-profit that helps put youth into Science, Tech, Engineering and Math opportunities.
Youth will compete by building an app around a theme. They will compete in three age groups: six to eight years, nine to 13 and 14 to 18 years. Participants in each round will vie for Chromebooks, laptops and gaming laptops, by collecting points through coding journeys, liking projects and developing the app.
“This is a great way to introduce students to a very valuable skill that can unlock opportunities for them, while also having the chance to win great prizes,” said Cassy Weber, CEO of MindFuel, who is putting on the event.
“Coding has so many applications, but it is not always addressed in school curriculums. These are our future innovators and leaders, and it all starts with early engagement and giving them the right tools to be successful.”
