Family wants answers in October 2019 shooting death of Matthew Maniago

The family of a man shot and killed in McKenzie Lake last year is pleading for answers in their son’s death.

Police are now releasing more information with the hope of unearthing clues in what they believe was a targeted killing.

Around 11:45 p.m. on Oct. 7, 2019 police were called to the 100 block of Mt. Aberdeen Manor SE after reports of a man in medical distress laying in the street.

Officers responded, along with EMS, but the man died at the scene.

He was later identified as Matthew David Maniago, 29.

According to police, closed-circuit footage from the area show two vehicles likely involved in the shooting. One was a blue 2017 Nissan Maxima and the other a white 2007 to 2009 Honda CRV.

Police said the Maxima was stolen from a residence two weeks earlier in Wentworth. That vehicle has been located. The CRV was stolen from a home in Douglasdale the day before the shooting. They haven’t located that vehicle.

Police believe the vehicles were also seen in Killarney prior to the shooting.

Father says there’s a ‘void’ that exists

Bob Maniago said his son has been “dearly missed by everyone who knew him.”

“His death has changed all of our lives. Without Matthew, there is a void that exists at every family gathering, every holiday and throughout every day,” his father said.

“Matthew deserves justice, and we are begging anyone who knows anything to please come forward. As a family we need closure and we are desperate for answers. We cannot go on knowing that there might be someone out there who can help us understand what happened.”

Police are asking anyone with information on the shooting, or on the vehicles that were involved to call 403-266-1234.

“We are committed to finding answers for Matthew’s family,” said Staff Sergeant Martin Schiavetta of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit.

“It has been more than a year since this murder occurred and we know that there are people out there who have information that could help our investigators. We are asking them to come forward so that we can provide a small amount of closure and justice for this grieving family.”
