Serious assault of elderly man at Sunnyside LRT station

An elderly man is in life-threatening condition in Calgary hospital after a serious assault on the Sunnyside CTrain platform Saturday morning.

Calgary police said that around 9 a.m. Saturday, the elderly man was on the platform at the Sunnyside LRT station when he was assaulted.

The man was struck down and fell onto the concrete platform where he hit his head. According to police he suffered severe head injuries.

The CPS Homicide Unit is now investigating the incident.

The suspect has been identified as Basil Sweezey, 36, of Calgary. He is described as Indigenous, in his 30s, with short hair. He had a prosthetic leg below his left knee and was wearing a red t-shirt, white shorts and white running shoes.
