The latest Calgary census shows a population of nearly 1.3 million, up just over 18,000 from 2018.
The city released Calgary census numbers Tuesday, with a 1.45 per cent increase year-over-year.
“Calgary is experiencing stable net migration in spite of a slower pace of economic growth,” said city economist and regulatory lead Oyin Shyllon, in a prepared release.
“As a result Calgary is expected to experience continued but modest population growth over the next five years.”
The exact Calgary census tally is 1,285,711 – up 18,367 from 2018.
Mahogany led Calgary census communities in growth, with an increase in population of 1,948. They now have a total of 11,784 residents. Four other communities had an increase of more than 1,000 people: Legacy, Nolan Hill, Cornerstone and Redstone.
Net migration was positive, with 9,560 people coming to Calgary and natural increase (births over deaths) was 8,807.
Calgary census: Growing even in economic recovery: Nenshi
“What the 2019 Civic Census tells us is that Calgary is growing even as we continue our economic recovery. We see where and how housing growth is taking place, giving us insight into how we need to plan our infrastructure investments. We are able to anticipate and plan for the effects an aging population is going to have on how the City operates,” said Calgary Mayor Nenshi.
“Building a city that focuses on quality of life requires good data and we’ll continue to make decisions based on the numbers for the benefit of all current and future Calgarians.”
Both online and tablet platforms were used for the Calgary census.
In 2019, 204,229 households submitted their census data through the online system – that’s up from 188,633 from last year. Tablets are used for door-to-door collection where a household didn’t, or wasn’t able to, submit their information online.
The census covers the period from April 2018 to April 2019.
The 2019 Census included the following questions:
- Total Number of Residents
- School Support
- Pre-school aged children born between 2013-2019
