Fireworks, music and plenty of face paint are on the docket for Calgarians celebrating the Canada Day long weekend.
The City of Calgary is encouraging people to check routes on the long weekend as there will be a number of road closures and detours in place for celebrations. Due to increased traffic in the downtown core, the city is also encouraging people to walk, bike or take transit.
The forecast is calling for a mainly sunny weekend with highs around 20 degrees.
Dozens of events are scheduled to take place in different parts of the city starting Monday morning. Below are some of the events happening on Canada Day in Calgary.
Heritage Park
Time: 10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Location: Heritage Park Historical Village (1900 Heritage Dr. SW)
Details: Celebrate Canada Day learning a bit about our country’s history while munching on some pancakes. This event features a pancake breakfast, an old-fashioned Dominion parade, horse races, line dancers and more. Regular Heritage Park admission is required.

East Village
Time: 10:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Location: Downtown East Village (630 8 Ave SE)
Details: Celebrate Canada Day with street vendors, food trucks, live music and cultural dancing. A community garden will host face painters and balloon twisters right beside a playground and dog park.

Calaway Park
Time: 10:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Location: Calaway Park
Details: Enjoy Canada Day with a thrill by stepping onto Calaway Park’s variety of rides. The Park will be open all day and host a series of giveaways.

CRAFT Canada Day Beer Fest
Time: 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Location: CRAFT Beer Market (345 10 Ave SW)
Details: Celebrate Canada Day by sampling beer from more than 15 local breweries along with an all day happy hour. Tickets are $20 online or $25 at the door with partial proceeds going to The Ride to Conquer Cancer.

Calgary Public Library
Time: 12 – 5:00 p.m.
Location: New Central Library (802 3 Street SE)
Details: Celebrate the many stories of Canada at the new Central Library in downtown. Calgarians can take part in special storytimes, Indigenous crafts and a road hockey game. There’s also musical performances, a tour of the spectacular new Central Library and the opportunity to get a special poem written just for you.

Max Bell Centre

Details: This free, family friendly festival includes a full lineup of live music and entertainment all day long. There’s also a kids zone, Indigenous village, food trucks and 18+ beer garden.

City Hall Plaza Salsabor
Time: 3:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Details: This free family-friendly event has Salsa, Merengue and Cuban dancing all afternoon. A rotating list of djs will be playing Latin tunes while dance academies will deliver free dancing lessons.

Eau Claire Market
Time: 11:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Location: Eau Claire Marker (200 Barclay Parade SW)
Details: This free all-day party features magicians, children’s crafts and a petting zoo. Calgarians can also browse through an artisan market and check out the family stage for live entertainment throughout the day. For the adults, Garage Sports Bar will be hosting a licensed area with live music until 9:00 p.m

Details: This free event includes a food trucks’ caravan, a Fort Calgary Kids Zone (which includes crafts, games and artifacts) and see the North West Mounted Police brass band perform live. Canada Day Official Fireworks

Location: Riverfront Ave & Centre Street Bridge
Details: Enjoy the fireworks show from any viewing location along the entire Bow River corridor. Best viewing places include: South Bow River pathway between 3rd Street SW & 1st Street SW, Riverfront Avenue, Tom Campbell’s Hill Park, Nose Hill Park and the Max Bell Centre.
