WOMEN’S HOCKEY: Cougars edge Dinos in back half of crosstown Crowchild Classic

Hailey Dirk, Cougar Athletics

CALGARY – On Saturday, the Mount Royal Cougars and the Calgary Dinos women’s hockey teams met for the second half of their Crowchild Classic at the Flames Community Arena, following a 3-2 win for the Dinos the day before. After a slow start, the Cougars gained the lead in the second period, failed to hang onto it, then earned it back in the third period to win 2-1.

Scott Rivett, Cougars head coach gave the credit for the win to his goalie Zoe De Beauville.

“She made some incredible saves, and kept us in the game when we needed her,” said Rivett.

Three penalties were given to the Cougars within the first period and following the second penalty, there was a complete scramble at the Cougars net, where goalie Zoe De Beauville just stopped a wandering puck. Despite the Cougars’ seemingly constant man-disadvantage, the first period left both teams hungry with a 0- 0 outcome.

When Laine Grace earned the Dinos’ their third penalty during the second period for shoving Cougar Tianna Ko, the Cougars scored the first goal of the game with a shot from Breanne Trotter. With a minute and a half left, De Beauville made a fantastic save, but the Dinos came back again with just 50 seconds on the clock and scored their lone goal of the contest. Dinos forward Elizabeth Lang closed out the second period with the game-tying goal.

The rivals were at an even start for the third period in a row. After relentless attacks on both sides of the ice,  a breakthrough came from Mount Royal’s Tatum Amy, bringing the Cougars back up to a 2-1 lead. With a minute and a half left of the game, Dinos goalie Kelsey Roberts left the ice for the extra attacker, but it wasn’t enough and Mount Royal hung on to win 2-1.

The Booster Juice Players of the Game were Zoe De Beauville from the Cougars and Elizabeth Lang from the Dinos. The Cougars will go on to play the University of Saskatchewan Nov. 16 and 17, and the Dinos will play the University of Regina Nov. 16 and 17.
