CALGARY, ALTA., (Nov. 10, 2018) — Shooting less than seven per cent from the field in a half of basketball is not a winning recipe.
That’s what happened Saturday, as the SAIT Trojans women’s basketball made just two shots from the field in the opening half as they fell 57-33 to the visiting Lethbridge College Kodiaks in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played at the Campus Centre.
“That is a number I have never seen on a scoresheet before,” said Trojans head coach Bir Parmar.
“But despite the worst offensive performance that I have ever been a part of, we were not out of that game. We went basket for basket with them in the third before falling apart again in the fourth quarter.”
SAIT falls to 3-3 on the season. Lethbridge College moves to 4-2.
“From the top down, it was a nightmare,” Parmar added. “A complete failure to execute a plan. There wasn’t one part of the game we weren’t outworked at. I’m just flabbergasted at the performance.”
In the opening quarter, the teams were tied 2-2 with 7:04 left. From there, it was all Kodiaks, as they went on a 10-2 run to take the lead.
SAIT cut the lead in half at 12-6 when Mel Woolley (5th year, Sturgeon County, Alta., Bachelor of Business Administration) sank a couple of free throws, but the Kodiaks then went on another big run, this one of the 11-0 variety to close out the quarter.
The second half was not much better, as nine of the 11 points they scored in the quarter came from the free throw line, as they went into halftime down 35-17.
In the third, the Trojans were able to cut the lead to 14 at one point, but that’s as close as they would get. A fourth quarter where they went 1-for-16 from the field sealed their fate.
“Thanks to Lethbridge for showing us about a hundred things we need to work on to be a better group,” Parmar finished.
SAIT returns to action next Saturday when they host the always-tough Medicine Hat College Rattlers at the Campus Centre in a 6 p.m. start.
