MEN’S HOCKEY: SAIT Trojans edge Portage College to open the season

By Ian Gustafson – SAIT Athletics

LAC LA BICHE, ALTA., (Oct. 5, 2018) — What better way to start the season than with a win, and that’s exactly what the SAIT Trojans men’s hockey team did.

The Trojans defeated the host Portage College Voyageurs in their own barn 2-1 on Friday night in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) season-opening game played in Lac La Biche, Alta. In a highly penalized game, the Trojans got an important road victory to begin the season.

“It felt great,” said Trojans head coach Brent Devost, who earned his first ACAC win after being hired to lead the team this past summer.

“I think everyone was excited to get started, and it’s always nice to get a win under your belt in Game 1.”

After a scoreless first period, the Voyageurs took a 1-0 lead early in the middle frame on a goal scored by Colby Livingstone.

SAIT responded quickly with a goal on the power play by captain Dean Allison (4th year, Surrey, BC, Bachelor of Business Administration).

Later in the period, Parker Evans-Campbell (3rd year, High River, Alta., Bachelor of Business Administration) gave the Trojans the lead on a goal that went off a few skates and in to the back of the net. Evans-Campbell’s first of the campaign would prove to be the game-winner.

In the third period, the Trojans survived multiple scoring chances by the Voyageurs to hang on for the win.

SAIT goalie Jordan Cartney (2nd year, Calgary, Business Administration turned aside 19 of 20 shots to earn his first ACAC victory between the pipes.

“I thought we dominated most of the game, their goaltender played fantastic but when our goaltender was called upon, we didn’t give up many scoring chances,” said Devost.

“We were opportunistic on our chances and we kept battling. . . Overall I thought we played a pretty good game.”

The Trojans and Voyageurs will finish the weekend set Saturday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m.
