SOCCER: Northover’s pair powers SAIT Trojans past Olds College Broncos

BY Ian Gustafson VIA SAIT TROJANS

CALGARY, ALTA., (Sept. 23, 2018) – The SAIT Trojans men’s soccer team continue to sit atop the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) South Division standings following a win Sunday afternoon.

In a closely-contested battle, the Trojans were able to do just enough to come away with a 5-3 win over the visiting Olds College Broncos at Cohos Commons Field. The Trojans improve to 5-0, while the Broncos move to 2-3-1 on the season.

Armando Garcia (2nd year, Edmonton, Alta., Academic Upgrading) opened the scoring to give the home team a 1-0 lead early in the game.

Dean Northover (3rd year, Calgary, Graphic Communication and Print Technology) scored the second goal of the game to put a header past the goalkeeper diving towards the net from a beautiful pass from Johnny Hutchinson (2nd year, Ottawa, Ont., Graphic Communication and Print Technology). He celebrated the marker with a cartwheel into a backflip that sent the crowd into hysterics.

The Trojans ended the opening half with a 2-0 lead.

Jake Walmsley (5th year, Cranbrook, BC, Business Administration) made it 3-0 Trojans early in the second half. Only shortly after, Mario Fabian Gromenida got the Broncos back in the game to make it 3-1.

Northover scored his second of the game to improve to a 4-1 lead.

“We did well in the first half today after struggling with that in past games,” said Northover. “We are starting to become a 90-minute team now which is nice.”

Walmsley added his second goal of the match to pull away from the competition to increase the lead to 5-1.

Gromenida scored two more goals for the Broncos to be the loan goal scorer for the Broncos – the final one coming off a penalty kick with no time left on the clock.

The match saw tensions run high with seven total yellow cards handed out.

“I like high emotion and I like to battle with players but I don’t like the disruptions of the game,” Northover added.

The ACAC Players of the Game were Johnny Hutchinson from the Trojans and Nicolas Depot from the Broncos.

Next week, Trojans men’s soccer heads to Medicine Hat on Saturday to take on the Rattlers and are back home on Saturday to matchup against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks. Both games start at 2pm.
