CALGARY — An investigation is underway after a police-involved shooting that occurred before a suspected truck thief’s erratic bid to escape from the law.
Police say the driver and officers got into a confrontation late Monday night during an attempted traffic stop, resulting in the truck colliding with a cruiser and a home in a northeast neighbourhood.
One officer at the scene fired a gun, but no one was hurt.
The driver sped away, at times steering into oncoming traffic which resulted in a minor collision.
The truck went out of control several minutes later and slammed into another house, where the police dog team helped arrest the driver before he was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries believed to be unrelated to the shooting.
No one else was hurt and the officer who fired the gun is now on a 30-day administrative leave.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team will look into the shooting while police consider charges against the truck driver.
